Six basecamps.

Day 4

The icefall.

Fixed lines through the seracs before the sun softens them. We move at 04:00 and we move fast.

Day 7

The plateau.

Nothing to look at but white, for sixty kilometres. This is where an expedition becomes a rhythm.

Day 12

The far shore.

Rock under the skis again. Nobody says summit. Everybody counts fingers.

Every route is guided at one to three. Every date is fixed a year out. Every price includes the things other operators list as extras.

The frozen Zanskar river is the only road in. We walk it at −25 °C to a monastery that sees no one until spring.
